Pune: The gang using currency notes as bait to steal cash bags struck outside Dena Bank at Bhosari again on Wednesday afternoon and fled with Rs2 lakh of a private firm employee.
Appasaheb Kisan Gaikwad (49) from Dighi lost his bag between 12.30 and 1pm. He lodged an FIR at the Bhosari police station late in the night.
Narrating his ordeal, Gaikwad said, “I withdrew money from my provident fund account for personal work, kept it in a bag and walked out of the bank. When I opened the lock of my motorcycle, a man came from the rear. He diverted my attention, saying my currency notes had fallen.”
He said, “I turned around and looked at the notes. Then I hung the cash bag on my bike’s handle and started picking up the notes of Rs10, 20 and 5 denominations, totally worth Rs125. When I looked at my two-wheeler, I was shocked on finding my bag missing. The suspect was nowhere around.”
Gaikwad said, “I rushed back to the bank and gave information of the
theft to the branch manager. But he scolded me for not keeping the bag in the bike’s boot. He advised me to lodge an FIR. When I came out, I found my vehicle’s rear tyre punctured. Then I walked up to the police station and lodged a complaint.”
He said, “I saw a suspect whose face was not covered. He was in the age group of 30-35 years. I cannot give details of the bag lifter because I did not see him carefully.”
A policeman said, “We suspect the involvement of the gang involved in spraying itching powder because they are in the habit of changing modus operandi for stealing bags. In the bag-lifting case at Bhosari, we suspect the involvement of a gang from Andhra Pradesh.”
He said, “Gaikwad stated the involvement of one person but we suspect more people were involved because each of them play different role, for instance conducting recce, diverting attention of the targets and stealing cash bags.”
Senior inspector Narendra Jadhav said, “Our teams are working on clues to establish the identity of the bag-lifters. We hope to solve the case soon.”
