Differences between two caste groups at village led to the situation

VIRUDHUNAGAR

Simmering differences between two caste groups at Inamreddiyapatti near the Collectorate here led to registration of three criminal complaints since Wednesday over different attacks on two boys and a girl.

Out of the 120-odd students, only 25 turned up for classes at the Government High School at Inamreddiyapatti on Thursday. Police said a teacher and a sanitary worker were transferred out of the school recently due to the differences between the two caste groups at the village.

On Tuesday, a few students of Inamreddiyapatti school beat up a Class XI boy of another school outside their school campus. On Wednesday, a Class IX boy of Inamreddiyapatti school assaulted a Class X girl on the school premises and her shirt was torn in the incident, the police said.

As the news spread, some people who came in support of the girl thrashed the boy. Soolakkarai police have registered three separate cases for the assaults on the Class XI boy, the girl and the Class IX boy. While two boys were booked in the first case, three men were held in the third case.

District Education Officer (in-charge) Srinivasan and other officials held a peace meeting with the parents of the students on Thursday. But the parents of only one group of students turned up for the meeting.

People of the other group said they would not send their children to the school unless three other teachers were transferred out of the school immediately. The officials said transferring teachers at the fag end of the academic year would affect the education of the students and promised to consider their demand in the next academic year.
