23.1kg of smuggled gold seized in Chennai

CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Chennai zone, seized 23.1kg of gold from Rameswaram-Chennai Sethu Express train when it reached at Egmore railway here on Thursday.

Acting on information about smuggling of huge quantity of gold, DRI officials conducted searches on Rameswaram-Chennai Sethu Express train and seized 123 gold bars from smugglers.


The smugglers were travelling from Rameswaram and had concealed the gold bars in specially designed pouches around their waist.


The gold bars had been smuggled in from Sri Lanka on a boat and then carried to Chennai by train, the DRI said.


The smugglers were arrested. Further investigations were on.
