MUMBAI: Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar will tomorrow file his nomination papers in Mumbai for the biennial Rajya Sabha polls from Maharashtra.

The elections for six seats from Maharashtra will be held on March 23.

The current term of Javadekar, a member of Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh, will expire on April 2.

"Javadekar will file his nomination papers (at Vidhan Bhavan) tomorrow," said BJP spokesman Keshav Updhayay.

With 122 MLAs in its kitty, the BJP is the largest party in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly.

With 42 votes needed for a winning candidate, the BJP seems to be in a position to send three members to the Upper House, if it could muster support of few more MLAs.

Javadekar is the only BJP leader whose name has been announced so far by the BJP's Central Election Committee for Maharashtra.

Out of the six seats up for grabs, the Congress and the NCP each held two seats while the BJP and Shiv Sena shared the rest.

The retiring members are: Ajay Sancheti (BJP), Anil Desai (Shiv Sena), Rajni Patil and Rajiv Shukla (Congress), and Vandana Chavan and D P Tripathy (NCP).

The NCP and the Congress would be able to send only one member each to the Upper House given their current strength in the Assembly at 41 and 42, respectively.

The NCP and the Shiv Sena have renominated their sitting members who have filed their nomination papers.

The Congress is yet to declare its candidates.

The deadline for submission of nominations is March 12.
