Nokia 5, Nokia 6 Start Receiving March Android Security Update

Highlights

  • HMD Global has started rolling out a new software update
  • The update is reaching the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 in select markets
  • It brings the March Android security patch

Weeks after releasing the anticipated Android Oreo update, HMD Global has now pushed another software update for the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 that brings the Android March security patch. The update is around 132MB in size and is rolling out in batches around the globe, user reports indicate. The Android March 2018 security update for the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 comes just a couple of days after Google started the rollout of the latest Android security patch for eligible Pixel and Nexus devices.

The Android update for the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 is rolling out in markets, including India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, UK, Hungary, Germany, Philippines, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Greece, and Tunisia, users claim, reports NokiaPowerUser. While the update notification will be pushed on the supported models in the coming days, you can check its availability manually by going to Settings > System updates.

HMD Global hasn't detailed any specific features in the update apart from the March Android security patch. Thus, the update addresses the issues that were noted in the Android Security Bulletin for the month of March. Among other security tweaks, the March Android security patch has a fix for a media framework vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code through a "crafted file".

The release of the new software update for the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 once again show how HMD Global is quick in seeding updates to its smartphones. Last month, the Finnish company released Android Oreo beta update for the Nokia 3, while the Nokia 8 also received the public release of Android 8.1 Oreo update in that same month.

Launched last year with Android Nougat, the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 received an update to Android 8.0 Oreo in January. That update brought features such as Picture-in-Picture (PiP), Smart Autofill, Notification dots, and the January Android security patch.
