New York right-hander Noah Syndergaard struck out seven straight hitters on Thursday, but the Mets suffered an 8-5 setback against the Washington Nationals at West Palm Beach, Fla.

Syndergaard gave up just two hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings in a dominating performance. He struck out the last three batters in the second, three straight in the third -- including Bryce Harper -- and the first batter in the fourth before being removed.

Matt Adams, who was Syndergaard's final strikeout victim, hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Nationals. Miguel Montero also homered and right-hander Stephen Strasburg gave up two runs and three hits and struck out five in 3 1/3 innings.

David Freese homered and had three RBIs and Starling Marte and Bryce Brentz also went deep as Pittsburgh sailed past Detroit at Bradenton, Fla. Edwin Espinal had a two-run single for the Tigers.

Red Sox 6, Rays 6

Boston's J.D. Martinez went 3-for-3 with an RBI double as the Red Sox and Rays played to a nine-inning tie at Fort Myers, Fla. Wilson Ramos and Mallex Smith each had two-run doubles for Tampa Bay.
