NEW DELHI: TDP’s decision to withdraw ministers from the Union government has been prompted not just by ‘denial’ of special category status for Andhra Pradesh, but also by the political manoeuvers of turf rival YSR Congress which is trying to outwit Chandrababu Naidu’s party in the state and catch BJP’s attention in checkmating it in Parliament.

The Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress, which ran neck-and-neck with TDP-BJP in voting percentage in the 2014 Lok Sabha and assembly polls, is in a position to give TDP a run for its money in 2019 elections. So far, numerical disadvantage vis-à-vis TDP in the Lok Sabha (TDP has 16 MPs, YSR Congress’ effective strength is 6 after 4 defected to TDP) has made it tough for YSRC to mark its presence on the floor of the House and send signals to Delhi’s political antenna, more so when TDP MPs have been occupying the Well with their slogan-shouting and colourful placards. TDP MPs were also ahead in sound-bite battles outside.

YSRC has more than made up for this disadvantage with Jagan carrying out a state-wide padyatra (similar to what his father, the late YS Rajashekara Reddy, did before defeating Naidu-led TDP in 2004 polls) against the TDP regime.

Jagan has been dominating political discourse back home and his party had started deploying itself to gain attention in Parliament.

YSR Congress has launched a letter campaign among Opposition parties to move a no-confidence motion against NDA this session and has sought the support of the statutory minimum number of 50 MPs for such a motion to be admitted.

Jagan had been planning to send personal letters to leaders of various Opposition parties urging them to sign on the YSR Congressproposed motion.

With TDP withdrawing its ministers, YSRC may seek its support too for the no-trust motion.

“Since both the NDA government and its ally Chandrababu Naidu betrayed the people of Andhra on the promises, including special category status and other developmental packages, Jagan Mohan Reddy will write within days to other Opposition leaders to back our move for moving a no-confidence motion. Since all other parties are party to the promises made to Andhra in Parliament at the time of state’s bifurcation, we hope they will stand by that commitment and back our resolve. Even TDP must sign if Naidu indeed is serious,” said YSRC Lok Sabha leader Mekapati Reddy, hours before TDP announced its withdrawal of ministers from the Centre.

On the apprehension that the Congress-led Opposition may not agree to a no-trust motion, YSRC is also planning a back-up action to match TDP. “If nothing works out, YSR Congress MPs will resign from Lok Sabha on April 6 to take the battle to the people’s court,” said Midhun Reddy, MP.

Congress and TDP suspect that BJP may dump incumbencyburdened TDP in the next polls and pick YSRC as ally (post-poll as YSRC’s support base comprise a huge chunk of minority votes), just as did in Nagaland recently by remaining part of NPF government in Nagaland and choosing its main rival NDPP.
