Violation of directions on fishing activities to invite stern action

more-in

The Director of Fisheries has issued directions to stop diesel subsidy or cancellation of licence/registration of boats indulging in banned fishing activities including fishing by using lights, bull-trawling and fishing of green mussels.

An official release issued here on Wednesday said that this decision had been taken at a meeting chaired by the Minister for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports Pramod Madhwaraj on March 6.

Any violation of directions would lead to stern legal action.

The meeting also decided to provide a relief of ₹1 lakh to the kin of fishermen who died during fishing activities at the coast, fisheries harbours and jetties and a compensation of ₹2 lakh if they died while fishing in the boats (without drowning). It was also decided to provide ‘Shaurya Prashasti’ from the State Fishermen’s Relief Fund to those who tried to save fishermen during accidents. This Prashasti would also carry a purse of ₹50,000.
