He is wanted in many cases of burglaries by Mumbai police

The Delhi Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a 28-year-old burglar who was allegedly inspired by Bunty chor and wanted films like Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! to be made on his life.

Sahib alias Sabu, who belongs to Uttar Pradesh, is wanted in many cases of burglaries by the Mumbai police. Two other persons who bought stolen articles from him were also arrested, they added.

Senior officer said over 50 cases of theft and burglary have been solved with Sahib’s arrest. They suspect his involvement in more than 1,000 thefts and burglaries across India.

Three burglaries daily

The Delhi Police said he made it a point to commit at least three burglaries daily, irrespective of the quantity of items stolen, to break Devinder Singh alias Bunty chor’s record in theft, burglary and forgery cases.

“We received a tip-off regarding a burglar wanted by the Mumbai police who was active in Shahdara and north-east Delhi. A team was formed to trace the accused. Initial probe led to Sahib’s arrest on February 23 from Geeta Colony in east Delhi. A team from Shahdara arrested his just as he was about to commit a burglary,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad.

“Based on revelations by Sahib during his two-day police remand, six laptops, five wristwatches, gold ornaments worth ₹7 lakh, 10 silver coins, 37 mobile phones, two two-wheelers, several silver utensils, three CCTV cameras, one device along with a CPU used to crack International Mobile Equipment Identity [IMEI] numbers of mobile phones, tools for breaking into houses and fake number plates of vehicles have also been seized,” Ms. Prasad said.

The two others arrested along with him would tamper with the IMEI numbers of stolen mobile phones and resell them, the police added.

“Sahib watched the film based Bunty chor’s life many times and had also read about him. He committed his first burglary while he was a teenager. He shifted to Mumbai, where he kept committing burglaries but never formed a gang,” added Ms. Prasad.
