WNBL: Canberra Capitals sign marquee player Kelsey Griffin
Kelsey Griffin has signed with the Canberra Capitals to become the club's first major signing for the 2018-19 WNBL season.
The 30-year-old Australian Opals star has signed a two year deal with the Capitals in a bid to help the club snap a seven-year finals drought.
She becomes the second player on Canberra's books for the upcoming season, joining 21-year-old Lauren Scherf.
It comes a day after Griffin was named in the Opals squad for the Commonwealth Games alongside outgoing Capitals rising star Eziyoda Magbegor.
The star forward will bring a handy inside presence to Capitals coach Paul Goriss' outfit and fill the void left by Magbegor and departing guard Abbey Wehrung.
"I've had the opportunity to work with Paul in an Opals capacity and he helped develop parts of my game," Griffin said.
"His plans for the Capitals align with what I want to achieve in my career and I'm keen to see where he can take me. I'm really excited to join this club."
Goriss says Griffin will be invaluable for the Capitals given she averaged 16.8 points per game in six matches for Bendigo last season.
"Kelsey is a proven winner, leader and competitor, and her work ethic at both ends of the court drives others to be better," Goriss said.
"Her ability to rebound, run the ball and defend gives us an all-round player with versatility and grunt."
Griffin will head to the United States in May for a training camp with the Connecticut Sun, before returning to Canberra for pre-season training in September.
