The police have enhanced security for all Periyar statues in the district following the attack on statue of Dravidar Kazhagam founder in Tiruppattur on Tuesday.
The vandalism took place after BJP National Secretary H. Raja made a controversial Facebook post against the leader.
In the city, security has been arranged for the statues in front of Periyar Study Centre at Gandhipuram, Puliakulam, Vellalore, Sundakamuthur, Athupalam, Sunnambu Kalvai and at Vadachittur near Samathuvapuram in Coimbatore rural.
The Periyar Study Centre is barely 100 metre away from the BJP office which was attacked on Wednesday morning.
Involvement of three Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) in the attack has also forced the police to step up security for the study centre and statue, said a senior police officer.
Meanwhile, Adhi Tamilar Peravai on Wednesday submitted a petition to P. Perumal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), in the absence of Police Commissioner, seeking action against Mr. Raja.
The petition said that the BJP leader's statement has incited communal tension in the State.
They wanted Mr. Raja to be booked under Section 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) of IPC.
