Former Union Minister Late Arjun Singh was engaged in bringing backward classes into the main stream. He was Messiah of poor in real meaning, said the speakers at the seventh death anniversary programme of late Singh organised in Churhat on Tuesday.
Providing free single phase electricity connection to poor was a historic step initiated by him and this changed the lives of needy in the State, the speakers added.
The programme organised at tomb of Arjun Singh near Rao Sagar Lake witnessed senior Congress leaders and representatives.
At the programme the speakers said that during Arjun Singh’s remarkable tenure he kept the weakest section of the society at the centre of Government and administration to make the section strong and mainstream with the society. There remains no doubt that he had done a lot for the upliftment of the poor.
His historic decisions included making Tendu leave workers as owner, providing ownership right of shanties to the residents and giving single phase electricity connection to the poor.
To bond weaker section of the society Mahajan Commission was constituted and on its recommendations 14 per cent reservation for the weaker section was provided.
The shouldering of responsibility of Ministry of Human Resource Development, making agreement for returning of people demanding Khalistan in Punjab in the capacity of Governor of Punjab were milestones of Arjun Singh’s in the Indian politics.
Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Ajay Singh, son of Arjun Singh, remembering his father, on the occasion expressed gratitude to the guests and dignitaries at the programme.
At the programme former minister Indrajeet Patel, Kamleshwar Dwivedi, MLA Kamleshwar Patel, MLA Yadvendra Singh, MLA Sukhendra Singh, former Mayor of Satna Municipal Corporation Rajaram Tripathi and former MP Manik Singh were present.
