Rice merchant shot dead in S’garh

A businessman was shot dead at a village weekly market area under the Bisra police station on Tuesday.

While the miscreants fled the spot, locals staged a road blockade for about four hours, demanding compensation to the family of victim and arrest of the accused. Senior police officials, including the Rourkela SP, assured prompt action against culprits, following which road blockade was vacated.

The deceased was identified as Hari Darshan Sahoo (42), a resident of Barilepta area, a rice merchant. On Tuesday, he had come to Bagdega weekly market to procure paddy for his business activity. At about 12 noon, when he was negotiating with a paddy seller, two youths opened fire at him from a close range. Sahoo died on the spot.

During investigation, police recovered two live bullets from the spot, which is suspected to have fallen on ground as a reason of misfire.

Sources said, the police are suspecting involvement of PLFI group in the incident.

"We are investigating in to the case and the culprits would be nabbed soon," said Rourkela SP Uma Shankar Das.
