Burglars suspected to have entered the store from a neighbouring building

Burglars entered a jewellery shop in Anna Nagar by breaking open the grill on the terrace, in the early hours of Tuesday. According to police 8.5 kg of gold and silver jewellery were reported missing from the store.

The shop, AKS jewellery, is situated on a four-storied building in Anna Nagar West opposite the Thirumangalam Metro station. The store that also sells gems and stones apart from gold and silver, has more then 10 employees.

The jewellery store is owned by Sivasankaran and Ayyapan. Mr. Sivasankaran was out of station when the burglary took place. On Monday night, Mr. Ayyapan closed the shop around 10 p.m. and went home after taking stock of the jewellery and the day’s sale.

On Tuesday, he opened the store around 9 30 a.m., and to his shock, found the jewellery missing. He inspected two other floors, where jewels were on display and found that they were also missing. A complaint was lodged with the Thirumangalam police station.

Deputy commissioner Sudhakar and other assistant commissioners in his jurisdiction inspected the scene of crime. Sniffer dog Jhansi was pressed into service and she ran to the streets around the shop. Forensic experts took fingerprints.

I-T inspection

“The shop owner told us that last month an income tax inspection was held in the shop and the owners had paid a fine amount. The remaining fine amount that to be paid this month was also kept in the shop. It is also suspected to be stolen,” said a police source.

Police suspect that the burglars had gained entry into the terrace through a narrow flight of stairs in the adjacent building. “The burglars are suspected to have clambered onto the building that houses the jewellery store and broken the chain and lock that had secured the grill door and entered the building,” added the source.

Police claimed that there was no proper security alarm inside the shop. The police have formed five special teams to crack the case.
