The Customs Air Intelligence Unit seized 10.10 kg of ganja from a passenger at the Cochin International Airport Limited on Wednesday.
The seizure was made from the check-in baggage of a Hyderabad resident bound for Dubai. The contraband concealed in three packets has been valued at ₹70,700.
Since seizures of various narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances are on the rise in the city, Intelligence officers are keeping a tight vigil on the movement of both the incoming and the outgoing passengers to track those serving as carriers for smuggling gangs, a release issued by Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar here said. He said that further investigations were on.
Parcel with dollars seized
The Postal Appraising Department of the Cochin Customs detained an import parcel containing dollars addressed to a consignee in Kottayam. The parcel, which had reached here on March 1, was despatched by a person in the U.S. and had declared it as containing “candy and letter”.
However, on examination, the parcel was found to contain U.S. dollars amounting to $5,900, which is equivalent to ₹3,82,615. The Commissioner of Customs, Sumit Kumar, said that the matter was under investigation.
Import or export of Indian and foreign currencies through foreign post offices is not permitted except with the permission of the Reserve Bank of India.
