NEW DELHI: The Centre informed the Supreme Court today that an Aadhaar number is not mandatory to apply for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examinations.

The Centre further said the UIDAI - which issues Aadhaar - has not authorised the CBSE to insist that medical study aspirants have an Aadhaar number.

This information was communicated to the top court which was hearing a plea on the issue filed by a Gujarat resident. Earlier this month, the CBSE made Aadhar number mandatory for the NEET application for this year.

During the course of hearing the plea, the apex court also asked the Centre to take a decision soon on extending the March 31 deadline + to mandatorily link Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile numbers. Any delay, the SC said, will create uncertainty, particularly in financial institutions.

"If you extend the deadline at the last moment then it will create a lot of confusion as it is the end of the financial year and banks have to ensure compliance," the top court said to the Centre.
