Rupee opens 7 paise up at 64.89 against dollar

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 620.08 crore on Tuesday.
The rupee on Wednesday opened 7 paise higher at 64.89 against the greenback on sustained selling of the American currency by banks and exporters.

The local currency on Tuesday closed 16 paise up at 64.96 against the dollar.

Meanwhile, domestic equity markets opened in the red following global cues. The BSE Sensex was trading over 80 points down at 33,234 at around 9.25 am (IST), while the NSE Nifty index was down 38 points, or 0.37 per cent, at 10,211.70.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 620.08 crore on Tuesday, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges. On the other hand, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 734.33 crore.

Government bonds (G-Secs) ended mixed in the previous trading session following alternate bouts of buying and selling.

Interbank call money rates ruled steady as demand from borrowing banks match supplies.
