Unidentified persons vandalised a statue B R Ambedkar in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, about 500 km from here, triggering tension in the area.

According to police sources here, some miscreants damaged a portion of the statue at Mawana Khurd village late on Tuesday night.

The matter came to light when the people saw the damaged statue on Wednesday morning, sources said.

Police officials rushed to the spot and managed to pacify the crowd by assuring to replace the statue.

Police ruled out any political motive behind the act claiming that it appeared to be the result of some enmity over a piece of land.

Sources said that security had been beefed up around the statues of dalit icons in different parts of the state.
