Jessica Jones Season 2 & Marvel Netflix Timeline Explained

Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Fist all parted ways after The Defenders. The second season of Jessica Jones does begin after the whole ordeal that left Daredevil missing in action beneath a skyscraper's worth of rubble after The Defenders finale. But it hasn’t been two and a half years in Marvel-Netflix time. The short answer? It’s been six months to a year since Jessica Jones killed Kilgrave in the Season 1 finale. How do we know how long its been between Jessica Jones Season 1 and Season 2? Process of elimination. Bare with us for a very tedious explanation.

The Defenders flashbacks to Elektra reveal the series takes place two months after Daredevil Season 2. Since Daredevil Season 2 overlaps with Luke CageClaire Temple’s crossover arc suggests The Defenders takes place around two months after Luke Cage. Jessica Henwick revealed The Defenders takes place one month after Iron Fist. According to Mike Colter, Luke Cage began about two months after the conclusion of Jessica Jones Season 1. This means it’s been anywhere from six months to a year since Jessica Jones killed Kilgrave.

The exact time depends on how long its been since The Defenders and the start of Jessica Jones Season 2, which is still largely unknown. It could be as short as a day or two or as long as a few months, which is why we give it a six month window. It is worth noting that The Defenders takes place over the course of only one single week, so Jessica Jones’ emotional wounds are fresh regardless. Six months to a year is nothing in the grieving process, especially when dealing with Kilgrave-level trauma.

Looking closely at two crossover characters, Claire Temple and Jeri Hogarth, tells us a lot about how time works in the Marvel-Netflix Universe. For example, Jeri Hogarth offers Foggy Nelson a job at her firm in the Daredevil Season 2 finale. In Jessica Jones Season 2, it’s clear the two lawyers have been acquainted for at least a few months because Jeri mentions sharing a case with Foggy. So as soon as we get a better idea about the span of time between the end of The Defenders and the start of Jessica Jones Season 2, we should have a more specific window.
