Thane: Thane civic commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal has announced that the corporation will spend Rs 10 crore on projects suggested by
residents provided the areas they live in have the highest number of DigiThane
mobile application users.
The decision was taken by Jaiswal during a review meeting on Monday where it was decided to allocate adequate funds and lure new users by empowering them in decision-making for select projects.
The DigGiThane app that was launched by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has apparently yet to find a foothold with citizens nearly over a month of its launch. Presently, there are a little above 10,000 users and the need to promote its usage among the nearly 18 lakh residents was discussed at the meeting. The initiative, which aims for an online citizen-administration communication, is the first of its kind to be made operational in the country and second in the work after Israel.
“It was decided that a closed group of DiGiThane users from a particular administrative ward of the city will be empowered to decide the initiation of any project in their area provided the number of users of the app is the highest in that stretch. The amount allocated is Rs 10 crore for the developmental works to be undertaken under this initiative,” said deputy municipal commissioner Sandeep Malvi.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that Jaiswal was not happy with the percolation of the application within the citizen community. The commissioner had set a target of 1 lakh users within two months but the number of hits is still hovering around the 10,000 mark.
“The civic commissioner is believed to have laid stress on promoting the application aggressively at the ward level and the citizen empowerment plans seems to be a part of this initiative,” said an official present for the review meet.
