Fire breaks out at Rochem garbage processing plant

Pune: A fire broke out at the Rochem garbage processing plant at Ramtekdi in Hadapsar on Wednesday.

According to officials of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), an excavator caught fire first which later spread to the garbage depot.


“The fire started around 11am and was controlled by around 2.30pm. Some Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) bricks were lying near the excavator. These bricks caught fire which further gutted the excavator and the garbage,” said Suresh Jagtap, head of PMC’s solid waste management department.


He said that the plant, which has capacity to process 350 tonne per day, was operating at 250 tonne after the fire incident. The work to assess the damages was being carried out till late in the night.
