Ahead of International Women’s Day, a private hospital observed the day in a unique way — by honouring a mother from Iraq who gave a new lease of life to her one-and-half-year-old daughter by donating a part of her liver.
Congenital disorder
Abhideep Chaudhary, senior consultant, Liver Transplant Department, Jaypee Hospital, Greater Noida, said: “The patient, one-and-half-year-old Fatima, suffers from Congenital Hepatic Fibrosis. The rare, congenital and inherited liver disorder was treated through hyper-reduced left lateral liver graft surgery on January 18.”
“Besides Fatima’s age, there was an issue with her heart too. One of the arteries that supplies blood to the lungs from the heart was not fully developed and we were worried that it might just get difficult for her to come out of ventilator support soon after the surgery. However, the surgery was successful and she came out of ventilation without any complications.”
Dr. Chaudhary added, “We encountered another challenge during the transplant. Due to Fatima’s age and weight, her body was unable to support the left lobe of her mother Hannah’s liver. So we had to reduce it as per Fatima’s body requirement. Not only did we dissected the liver, we also had to reduce its thickness during the donor surgery before the transplant.”
The hospital said Ms. Hannah and Fatima are recovering fast and fit to go back to Iraq.
Amit Devra, senior consultant, Urology and Kidney Transplant Department, Jaypee Hospital, added: “When a kidney operates at just 10% of its capacity, it is considered renal failure. In such cases, either dialysis or kidney transplants are the only options for patients. People need to be made aware of organ donation and how they can save many lives.”
