A 52-year-old bus driver attached to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) died while he was driving the bus near Red Hills on Tuesday morning. He saved the lives of passengers by halting the bus by the side of the road before losing consciousness.

According to police, bus number 61 R operates between Avadi and Red Hills and plies through Kollumedu, Arikambedu, Lakshmipuram, SIDCO Estate Phase.

Since there are very few buses on this stretch, the bus is crowded most of the time. Around 9.30 a.m., the bus driven by Sunderaraj of Nemillichery left the Avadi depot. The conductor was Ravichandran. By the time the bus reached the Red Hills - Tiruvallur Kootu Road junction at 10 a.m., 53 passengers were onboard.

All of a sudden, Sunderaraj complained of chest pain and stopped the bus by the side of the road and collapsed. He was rushed to a private hospital nearby, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The Red Hills police registered a case.
