The Centre informed the Supreme Court that an Aadhaar number is not mandatory to apply for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examinations. The Centre further said the UIDAI - which issues Aadhaar - has not authorised the CBSE to insist that medical study aspirants have an Aadhaar number. This information was communicated to the top court which was hearing a plea on the issue filed by a Gujarat resident. Earlier this month, the CBSE made Aadhar number mandatory for the NEET application for this year.
