This year, the report identified a lack of skilled personnel as being IT security's greatest inhibitor to success, which trumped low security awareness amongst employees as the primary inhibitor for the first time in five years. In fact, four in five organizations globally are experiencing an IT security skills shortage in 2018.
Security practitioners also identified the inability to reduce the organizations' attack surface as being one of the most challenging internal IT security functions, second only to the development and testing of security applications. Industries such as Healthcare and Financial Services are especially impacted by these challenges and are highly targeted by external cyberthreats, as hackers stand to gain the most from accessing sensitive Patient Health Information (PHI) and financial data.
