The debate, which will commence at 3pm, is held to commemorate the contribution of former Governor of Madras during the time of British East India company, Elihu Yale. Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women won the rolling trophy last year at the event which saw the participation of 15 colleges competing for top honours.
Several universities and colleges in the city are expected to participate at this year’s event as well. The topic for the upcoming debates is ‘Monitoring the media – should we or not?’
The aim of the initiative is to support innovation in the educational system by encouraging students to explore their potential and hone their skills in research, communication and presentation. The contest also seeks to provide students a platform to discuss issues relating to India, the US and the rest of the world – thereby promoting better relations between nations.
An eminent panel of judges has been brought on board for the occasion – chaired by former Chief Secretary to the TN government and Central Vigilance Commissioner of India, P Shankar. The prizes are set to be distributed by Padmashree M Rafeeque Ahmed, president of Southern India Chambers of commerce (SICCI) and Gregory Bauer, Vice Counsel of the US consulate in Chennai.
