With Oscars done and dusted, it is about time we look ahead at what this year has to offer in terms of big-screen entertainment. Turns out, this year has to offer a lot. Even March, usually pretty tame, is bursting with big, important releases from big studios. There is a fantasy film, a video-game adaptation, a monster movie, an animated film and a science-fiction film - something for all tastes. Here is our list of top five movies you should not miss this month.
A Wrinkle in Time: A Wrinkle in Time is based on the classic fantasy novel of the same name by Madeleine L'Engle. It stars Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Chris Pine. The story is of a young girl who travels across space and time to search for her missing father with her friend and brother. A Wrinkle in Time is heavy with thematic elements which Disney loves so much: adventure, childhood, teenage angst and friendship. It will release on March 9.
Tomb Raider: A reboot of the embarrassingly bad video-game adaptation series starring Angelina Jolie, Tomb Raider stars Alicia Vikander in the main role of the adventurer Lara Croft. Tomb Raider also stars Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Kristin Scott Thomas. Let us hope this film produced and distributed by Warner Bros as opposed to Paramount, would be worth it what with an Oscar winner (Vikander) as the lead actor. Tomb Raider will release on March 9.
Pacific Rim Uprising: Pacific Rim Uprising is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. In Pacific Rim Uprising, the monstrous sea creatures called Kaiju once again rise from the depths of the Pacific, and once again Jaegars rise up as the saviours of humanity. This time, John Boyega is the lead character, and plays the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba's character in the first film). The film will release on March 23.
Isle of Dogs: It was the opening film of 68th Berlin International Film Festival held this year, Isle of Dogs is directed by Wes Anderson (he of Moonsire Kingdom and Fantastic Mr Fox). Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum have given their voices to the characters. A boy goes to search for his dogs to an island where the the canines were quarantined due to a flu. Isle of Dogs will release on March 23.
Ready Player One: Probably the most awaited film of the month, Steven Spielberg directorial Ready Player One is based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name. It paints a dystopian future. Most of the people live in slums. The earth is ravaged by pollution and climate change. To escape this harsh reality, people engage in OASIS, a virtual-reality programme. Ready Player One will release on March 30.
