Periyar statue controversy: ‘Party does not endorse view’

more-in

BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan has said that the party does not endorse H. Raja’s view that the statues of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy across the State should be removed.

When asked about the comment, which provoked anger among political leaders cutting across party lines, she said the question should be put to Mr. Raja himself. On actor Rajinikanth’s stated aspiration of filling the “political vacuum” in Tamil Nadu as the present politicians had failed in their duty, the BJP leader said, “He, as an aspiring political leader, can try to fill the vacuum, but not by portraying other political leaders in bad light.”

The BJP, which emphatically ended the CPI(M)’s 25-year reign in Tripura, did not raze the statue of Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin, Dr. Soundararajan claimed.

Dr. Soundararajan said that the people of three northeastern States had voted for growth by supporting the BJP. With the party now in power in 22 States, it will also form the government in Tamil Nadu through proactive politics and not through back-door operations, she said.
