According to sources, the two are residents of Gurdaspur in Punjab and in their mid-thirties. They were smuggling 24-carat gold in the form of bars. One woman had concealed gold bars weighing 450 grams worth Rs 14.5 lakh, while the other had 350 grams worth Rs 11 lakh, sources said.

An official said the women first denied holding any gold but they had to summon women officers, who took them to the washroom and extracted the gold bars.

This is the fourth incident of passengers being caught concealing gold in the rectum at the airport. Last week a man travelling from Bangkok was caught with 227 grams of 24-carat gold worth Rs 6.8 lakh in his rectum.

Most times, people trying to smuggle in the gold are not from Tricity and use this airport as it is new. An official said people try to smuggle gold from cities like Chandigarh, hoping security would not be tight.
