Malayali singer Sajna Sudheer’s Kana kana vaazhgiren... is penned by Charu Hariharan

Love never dies, they say. Sajna Sudheer’s new single Kana kana vaazhgiren..., a romantic melody, takes inspiration from Julia Roberts’ words: “You know it’s love when all you want is the other person to be happy even if you are not a part of their happiness.”

The mellifluous Tamil track, released on Wednesday by Muzik247, is a paean to lost love. “We wanted ‘lost love’ as the central theme of the song. However, we refrained from releasing it on Valentine’s Day. Though the song speaks about an age-old leitmotif in art, it is not clichéd and attempts a mature take on the theme,” says Sajna, who has composed and sung the number.

“It talks about a woman who falls in love unapologetically with someone she knew wouldn’t be able to be with her in the long run. Though she knew they were like two parallel lines, she never regrets nurturing the love even for a second. She lives in her own dreams, hence the title.”

With keyboard, violin and guitar featuring as the key original instruments, Sajna, an assistant professor of music at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, says the rest of the track was programmed by her students themselves.

For musician Charu Hariharan, who penned the beautiful lines, the challenge was to keep it short and simple. The tune was set first and Charu worked on the song with dummy lyrics initially. “The mood of the song had to convey neither complete melancholy nor full liberation. We wanted to finalise the lyrics before commencing the shooting as the lyrics served as the foundation of the song’s theme. I had to spend about two days perfecting just two lines as I found the melody quite tricky. The tune had to be short and so were the words. It was almost like précis writing, but I enjoyed the challenge,” says Charu, who had previously released a Tamil single Moodi thirandidum....

Sajna says choosing Tamil over Malayalam was not a conscious decision. “For me, the tune always comes first. I realised that the tune I developed for Kana kana vaazhgiren... ideally suited Tamil or Telugu. Its patterns featured a lot of throws and modulations, which suits the cadences of Tamil. Also, Tamil is a language I can relate to closely.”

Directed by Sidharth Rajendran, the song video was shot in Varkala beach and features Sidharth himself and model-actress Amalda Liz.
