The piped water supply situation in the district seems satisfactory, with water levels in Periyar and Choondi rivers being adequate at intake points.
At present, water shortage is experienced only in a few pockets in the district, and there is no crisis situation, District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla said.
Even in places where piped water coverage is less, there are only a few areas where wells have dried up. Meanwhile, the district’s irrigation projects — Periyar valley canal and Edamalayar canal — have released water, recharging wells.
Water kiosks
Last year, the district administration had opened more than a hundred water kiosks in areas facing water shortage. The number will touch 140 this year, Mr. Safirulla said.
He added that the drought situation, if any, was being monitored on a daily basis, and that the disaster management system would be set in motion if need arose. Incidentally, the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) also has not reported water scarcity in the district. Senior KWA officials said that the Aluva and Maradu treatment plants were supplying over 350 million litres a day (mld) of water.
Of the water supplied, the corporation alone gets around 220 mld of water, catering for a population of nearly 6 lakh and a floating population of 2 lakh.
The treatment plants at Muppathadam, Choondi, and Chowara have not been affected by the onset of summer.
