Kolkata: After the Lenin statue in Tripura and the Periyar statue in Vellore, Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee's bust vandalised in Kalighat, Kolkata.
The statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee was damaged in Jadavpur University in West Bengal on Wednesday.
Police said a group of students blackened the face of the statue and tried to bring it down. Six students have been detained.
The SP Mookerjee bust that was damaged today in Kolkata is located at the Keoratala crematorium in the southern part of the city. The location is not far from CM Mamata Banerjee's residence.
A minister of Mamata's cabinet, reacting to the incident, blamed it on "an ultra Left Naxal student body" from the Kolkata's Jadavpur University.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed strong disapproval after the vandalism. PM Modi, according to a government statement, spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh who has ordered states to act sternly to check such incidents.
The home ministry has asked the states that they must take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents. Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with & booked under relevant provisions of law.
