7 facilities in the Ambattur area have got ISO 9001:2015 certification

In a move that is likely to boost the image and performance of the police, seven stations in Ambattur police district received the ISO 9001:2015 certification on Februrary 27.

The facilities at Thirumullaivoyal, Kundrathur, Ambattur Estate, Avadi Tank Factory, SRMC, Pattabiram and Nazarathpet received the certification that is valid till February 2021. Surveillance audits will be conducted annually and renewal audits will be conducted after three years.

M. Ramkumar, a consultant for ISO certifications, said the police approached him in July last year. “I visited the stations and suggested improvements,” he said.

There were around 10 areas where improvement was needed. “The ISO 9001.2015 certification is for quality management and control. In the case of police stations, it is a reflection of petitioner satisfaction and how the case is handled from the moment it is filed till it is completed,” he added. Some of the measures were installation of boxes for residents to pass information while maintaining anonymity, computer literacy for policemen, time limits and a monitoring system for cases and feedback for cases. “The feedback for cases was not done by the same investigation team, but by an independent one. Based on the response, improvements were made," he added.

By mid-February, the entire process was completed. “Representatives of a private company called Quality Austria conducted the inspection and certified the stations recently,” he said.

Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan said the same process would be emulated in other stations too.

Ambattur deputy commissioner S. Sarveshraj said the hard work by the team had paid off.
