Fire broke out for the second time within 10 days at the Vellalore dump yard on Monday.
According to sources, the fire began on Monday evening at a place not far from where the fire broke out last time on February 24. It happened even as a few heavy machineries were working to segregate the waste and a fire tender and eight water tanker were stationed.
The officials there immediately pressed those vehicles into service, the sources added.
But residents of the area said that thick black smoke billowed from the burning waste and surrounded Mahalingapuram and its neighbourhood. Kurichi-Vellalore Residents’ Association member K.S. Mohan said another fire breakout was waiting to happen as smoke continued since the Saturday’s accident.
