DALTONGANJ: This International Women’s Day in Palamu is going to be different. On this day Rani Mistris will be felicitated.
DC Palamu Ameet Kumar said, “Under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) 1.50 lakh individual house hold latrine (IHHL) are to be built. There is a big need of masons. Masons are males everywhere. Here in Palamu an attempt has been made to prepare a fleet of female masons who are called Rani Mistri as male ones are called Raj Mistri”. Kumar added this arrangement is done to overcome the acute shortage of masons in the district besides giving a good chance to women to stand up and earn a decent living too.
The DC took the name of one Rani Mistri Begum Rani of Chiyanki who has so far built 50 individual house hold latrines. Ameet Kumar said this Rani Mistri is committed and devoted. There are many more in blocks like Lesliganj Chhaterpur etc.
Reminded that mason is a man’s cup of tea and woman doing this job is something novel to which DC Palamu said this is the real empowerment of women. It has opened a new vista for women to earn fast. One IHHL takes 8 days and a Rani Mistri depending upon her finesse and fitness of work can earn wages ranging between Rs350 to Rs400 a day.
However, sources said wages to available Rani Mistris are coming to them with great pains as Rani Mistris are to wait weeks for their wages. PNS
