indexCycling events in Cape Town boost the economy by contributing more than R1billion per annum. This year, there’s an inaugural race taking place in Stellenbosch – the UCI World Cup series is starting there for the first time.

Such events attract thousands of local and international competitors and their supporters, who often spend extended stays in the destination. Hence, such big sporting events are imperative, but with an improved focus on saving water. Saving water is extremely important in the Cape as well as other parts of the country which are dealing with an increasingly scarcity of water.

Besides the UCI World Cup series, the Cape is host to cycling events that spawn an enormous amount for the region. Cape Town Cycle Tour, for example, is one such event that is of high importance. It is the world’s biggest individually-timed cycling race with 35000 participants, 4000 of whom are international visitors.

The peninsula’s roads are a pleasure to ride mountain bikes. That race alone brings more than R500million, and it does wonders for locals and visitors for taking to the roads and trails on two wheels.

This year, the Cape Town Cycle Tour is dealing with the water shortages with responsible measures designed to combat any impact, including sourcing water from places with plenty.
