Mobile recovered from Haridwar jail

A mobile phone recovered from an inmate of Haridwar district jail during the routine inspection on Sunday  which threw the jail administration into a tizzy.

Notably, the State police brass has been continuously asking the jail administration to ensure that the mobile phones are out of bounds for the inmates in the wake of reports of hardcore criminals running their crime networks through mobile phones from inside their prison cells. Expressing dismay over the recovery of a mobile phone from a jail inmate, a senior police officer said that the funds allotted to the jails for ensuring fool- proof security through installing jammers and CCTVs have been returned unspent.  Soon after the recovery,  the deputy jailor has registered a case in SIIDCUL police station and subsequently a case under appropriate sections of Jail Act-1894 has been registered. The inspector general of jails PVK Prasad said that an inquiry is on and action would be taken against those found lax in security of the jail. 

It is learnt that the mobile phone was recovered from an inmate identified as Chand Mohammad, a murder accused and a notorious Meerut-based gangster. Recovery of mobile phones from the jail inmates was reported earlier this year from  Nainital jail where a mobile phone was recovered from a  jail toilet on January 5.  A number of such cases had been reported in the past from several jails, including  Haridwar and Dehradun jails, something which made the police brass to sit in alarm and ask the jail officials to stop entry of mobile phones into the jails.

IG Jail PVK Prasad said that such surprise inspections in the barracks of the jails would continue. “Besides, jammers would be installed in various jails in the coming days to stop the inmates from using mobile phones,” he added.
