A record number of 4.45 lakh Olive Ridley sea turtles laid eggs at the Rushikulya river mouth this year as against 3.7 lakh last year, informed DFO Asish Behera on Monday.
Behera said Olive Ridley sea turtles started laying eggs on February 20, and most of the turtles have laid eggs on the beach from Gokharkuda to Podampeta. The turtles usually take 45 days to hatch eggs, and security measures have taken by the administration. Large numbers of people are now visiting the beach to see egg-laying. While an Olive Ridley weighs around 50 kg, it lays about 140 to 160 legs at one time.
