One person has been taken to hospital after the Puffing Billy steam train and a tour bus collided near Menzies Creek.

Four people were treated at the scene and of those one person was taken to Dandenong Hospital, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

A Monash Health spokeswoman said the person taken to hospital was in a stable condition.

Photos taken by a bystander show that the tour bus appeared to clip the side of the train and ended up on its side.

A passenger on the train, Laurie Harris, said he was in the carriage behind the one that was struck by the mini-bus and saw the crash unfold at a crossing near Menzies Creek.

"We saw a white van with a trailer come hurtling down the the hill and it collided with the train," Mr Harris said.

"The carriage shook really badly, then the van veered left and was pulled about 50 metres along the tracks, derailing one of the carriages."

"The carriage was smashed up and there was glass everywhere. I reckon it would be a write-off."

Mr Harris said there were about six passengers in the carriage that got struck and several people in the mini-bus, but that nobody appeared to have been injured.

He said those on board the train at the time included a doctor and a nurse, who got out and checked people for injuries afterwards.

Mr Harris said the railway staff had refunded his ticket and had organised a replacement bus to get passengers back to Belgrave Station.

Puffing Billy's manager of operations Nadine Hutchins said train services for the rest of the day had been cancelled.

It is not yet known whether Puffing Billy Services will resume tomorrow.
