NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday assured the
Supreme Court that appointment of an eminent person on the selection committee for
Lokpal would be done “at the earliest” to pave the way for appointing the anti-graft ombudsman.
Under the Lokpal and
Lokayukta Act of 2013, the high-level selection panel for appointment of Lokpal comprises the Prime Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker, Leader of the Opposition, Chief Justice of India and an eminent jurist chosen by them. When a bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi asked attorney general K K Venugopal whether there was any indication on when the selection of eminent person would be done, he replied, “it will be done at the earliest”.
The bench , however, granted more time to the Centre to take steps for appointment of Lokpal and fixed the next hearing for April 17.
