Defeat a Groundhog Day moment - Hodgson

2018-03-06 11:14

Cape Town - Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson believes his team deserved at least a point against Manchester United, after losing 3-2 at Selhurst Park on Monday.

The Eagles were on track to claim a famous victory over Jose Mourinho's men after Andros Townsend and Patrick van Aanholt put Palace 2-0 ahead.

Chris Smalling though pulled one back 10 minutes into the second-half and Romelu Lukaku equalised in the 76th minute.

At that point, Hodgson expected his charges to come away with a point, but a stoppage-time strike from Nemanja Matic denied the hosts, leaving them with a bitter defeat instead.

"It was a bit of a Groundhog Day moment," he told Sky Sports.

"Once again we did really well and the experienced players in the squad are doing fantastically well to help the younger players. The only thing is that has saddened me today is the fact we've gone home with no points.

"I do really think that a performance like that deserved something. At one stage we look like we were going to get all three but you know the quality Manchester United possess and their strength in depth.

"There's a chance you're going to be under the cosh even if you're leading by two goals. I was expecting to come away with one point but we've got nothing and I find that tough for the players to take."
