VELLORE: Tension gripped passengers on the Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express after they heard a loud sound from under the train when it was nearing Pudur gate in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday evening.

One of the passengers pulled the emergency alarm chain at 5.30pm and brought the train to a sudden halt one kilometre away from Vaniyambadi railway station.

When the train came to a halt, the scared passengers stormed out of the coaches, said the railway officials.

Loco pilot and guards checked the train and found that some miscreants had placed stones on the track. When the rail wheel ran over the stones, it created a loud sound. Mistaking it for an explosion, the passengers had panicked and pulled the chain, he added.

The train resumed its journey at 5.42pm.
