Burglars broke into a jewellery shop on Second Avenue, Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar West during the early hours of Tuesday and allegedly stole ten kilograms of gold and silver jewellery. The suspects broke the grill on the terrace and gained entry into the shop.

The shop, AKS jewellery, is situated on a ground and three-storeyed building on the main road opposite the Tirumangalam metro station.

The shop is owned by Sivasankaran and Ayyapan. Sivasankaran is not in town and Ayyapan was managing the shop on Monday.

On Monday night, he closed the shop around 10 p.m. and on Tuesday morning around 9.30 a.m. when he opened it again he found the jewellery missing.

He inspected the remaining two floors and found that the jewels kept there for display were also missing. Police sources claim that the hard disk for the CCTV camera was also stolen.

A complaint was lodged with the Thirumangalam police station. Sniffer dogs and forensic experts were pressed into service.

“Last month a income tax inspection was conducted in the shop and the owners had paid a fine amount. The remaining fine amount to be paid this month was also kept in the shop. That was also stolen,” said a police source.

Police said that the door that leads to the terrace was not closed. A special team has been formed to crack the case.
