Proteas will nag Warner over wife - Hogg

2018-03-06 10:25

Cape Town - Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg says he expects the Proteas to continue sledging David Warner for the remainder of the Test series.

Australia’s first Test win in Durban was overshadowed by the Day 4 row between Warner and South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock.

CCTV footage showed Warner apparently turning on De Kock as the players walked up a narrow staircase leading to the dressing rooms at the start of the tea interval at Kingsmead on Sunday.

It is believed that De Kock made a derogatory comment about Warner’s wife Candice.

In an interview with Fox Sports, Hogg said he expected Candice’s name to come up regularly for the remainder of the series.

“As far as I’m concerned you don’t say anything about someone’s family, it’s all about one-on-one, about that particular person or how they’re playing in the middle,” Hogg said.

“To be frank, South Africa have found a little sweet spot with David Warner. I think they’ll be trying to nag him in the next three Test matches about his wife now, or they’ll try and say something concerning Candice in the next three Test matches which is slightly getting under David Warner’s skin. They’ve opened up a can of worms here.”

While the Australians are adamant that De Kock started the altercation, reports indicate that the visitors also got personal with their remarks.

Afrikaans website Netwerk24 said De Kock was labelled as a "bush pig" by the Australians, while The Guardian in England reported that it was Warner who called De Kock a “bush pig”.

Netwerk24 further reported that De Kock hit back after the Australians also made remarks about his mother and sister.
