Evacuation after cake sparklers ignite Mosman Park flat

A firefighter has been injured, 150 people evacuated and 50 others relocated to emergency housing after a birthday cake sparkler caused a fire in a Mosman Park block of units on Monday night.

Police and firefighters were notified of the blaze at the Wellington Street building around 11.26pm and arrived to find the eighth-floor unit fully ablaze.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said it was started accidentally by a birthday cake with sparklers on it. The details of how exactly this happened were not yet known, he said.

Police evacuated neighbours as firefighters extinguished the fire, containing it to one apartment. One firefighter had to go to hospital with a minor shoulder injury.

The fire, smoke and water caused about $750,00 damage to the complex.

Residents were allowed to go back inside on Tuesday morning to collect essential belongings.
