Mixed injury news for struggling Stormers

    2018-03-06 12:12

Cape Town - The Stormers on Tuesday received both good and bad news on the injury front.

The Cape franchise announced that flanks Cobus Wiese (shoulder) and Kobus van Dyk (ankle), as well as wing Seabelo Senatla (groin) would be given until Wednesday to prove their fitness ahead of their next Super Rugby clash against the Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday.

Kick-off is at 08:35 SA time.

Meanwhile, centre Dan du Plessis has recovered fully from a shoulder injury and will be available for selection to face the Blues at Newlands the following weekend.

Flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis (groin) has returned to full training and is expected to be fit for selection in the next few weeks.

Both Eben Etzebeth and Frans Malherbe are said to be progressing well on their rehabilitation programmes and will continue to be assessed closely.

Bad news-wise, lock JD Schickerling will undergo surgery on a torn pectoral muscle and has been ruled out for four months, while hooker Bongi Mbonambi has had two abdominal surgeries as a result of appendicitis and will only be fit to train fully in three months.

The Stormers are currently on a two-match losing streak, having lost to the Waratahs in Sydney and the Crusaders in Christchurch on their Australasian tour.

The Stormers opened their 2018 campaign with a victory over the Jaguares and find themselves in second place in the South African Conference and sixth in the Overall standings.
