The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on Monday announced to lend their support to Samajwadi Party candidates in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha by-elections in Uttar Pradesh.
The party, which has one member in the Assembly, has also decided to vote in favour of the SP and BSP candidates in the coming Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council biennial polls in the state.
Giving details about the RLD decision, national media in-charge Anil Dubey said that the decision was taken to avoid division in secular votes. “The decision was to stop the BJP government in the Centre and the state from spreading communal canards, to strengthen opposition unity and stop exploitation of farmers by faulty policies,” he said.
Dubey added that the RLD will support any political front which would fight against the forces working against the farmers and youths.
RLD sources said that the decision was taken after a marathon meeting of senior RLD leaders in New Delhi prompted by BSP’s decision to support Samajwadi Party in Gorakhpur and Phoolpur Lok Sabha by-elections. They said that RLD leaders were unanimous in their decision after examining all pros and cons.
“The results to come will decide the future policy of the RLD on cobbling up an alliance-strategy with secular forces,” the sources said. They said that the decision of RLD chief Ajit Singh has been circulated among office bearers of the state unit also.
Meanwhile, state RLD unit leaders welcomed the decision of their leader saying that the party’s ideology was aimed at fighting for farmers and strengthen secular forces in the country.
