The government of Cambodia is making the best efforts to turn Thalaborinath district of Stung Treng into an area reputed for the presence of tiny black stones that regional inhabitants refer to as ‘black rice’ into a brand new tourist attraction.
The region is based at a distance of nearly 400 kilometres north of Phnom Penh.
It is a beautiful place filled with little pebbles known in Khmer as ‘ang kor neang kmao’ that experts are currently studying to know more about their composition and history.
On Porshean who is the director of tourism department of Stung Treng asserted that the ‘Black Rice area’ is thought to be enriched with a cultural and historical significance and officials are currently studying it and compiling information.
Deputy governor of Thalaboriwat, Ouk Bunthon said that the move would be contributing the development of the province, especially the tourism sector.
He said that the regional authorities and officials from the Ministry of Cult and Fine Arts are already working to transform the area into a protected cultural heritage site.
Despite having a restricted number of restaurants and hotels catering to tourists, Stung Treng also continues to lure more visitors every year.
Last year alone 9,000 foreign tourists had visited the province.
