The inauguration of Bengaluru Central University (BCU) will be done on March 7 amidst much fanfare. But the event has already kicked up a storm as officials of the university have decided not to invite the Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, who is the chancellor.
The official invite mentioned Chief Minister Siddaramiah, Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi, nine ministers and several elected representatives and renowned alumni, but not the Governor. BCU is set to spend ₹25 lakhs for the event, which will also see the launch its website.
Addressing mediapersons on Monday, Vice Chancellor S. Japhet said they had to skip calling the Governor as there was a need for decorum to be maintained when the Governor arrives. “We got the date for the Chief Minister about 15 days ago. We thought it will be difficult to match dates with the Governor,” he said.
Prof. Japhet said that there is a need to call ministers as they were trying to help the university get more land. The Vice-Chancellor said they would invite the Governor in June for the launch of the academics of the university.
The varsity has 239 colleges under its jurisdiction and 16 new ones have applied for permission to start colleges.
Won’t meet UGC norms
For the next academic year, BCU may not be meeting the University Grants Commission norms regarding faculty requirement. As of now, it has only 37 working posts across eight departments.
Prof Japhet said that they would seek additional posts, which would be filled up based on deputation or contract.
Apart from this, many of the staff of Bangalore University have been given the option to pick which of the three universities they would want to work for — either the parent Bangalore University, Bengaluru Central University or Bengaluru North University.
