Sensitive data may have been stolen during a robbery at the Melbourne Children's court earlier this year.

A burglary at a CBD building was reported by Victoria Police in January, however, it can now be revealed the robbery occurred inside the Children's Court.

A man gained entry into the Little Lonsdale Street building about 1.45am on January 8.

Once inside, he rummaged through staff drawers and left the building with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The man is described as Caucasian with a thin build and he was wearing a blue zip-up hooded jacket, grey track pants and grey sneakers at the time of the robbery.

Police have released an image of the man in the hope that someone may recognise him.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
